Woods Hole renames street for female oceanographer Marie Tharp

FALMOUTH — A street going through Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's campus has been renamed to honor an oceanographic cartologist who introduced the first scientific map of the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. Marie Tharp Lane will replace Maury Lane, which had been named after oceanographer Matthew Maury, according to a March 11 press release from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). “She was quite a remarkable scientist,” said Planning Board member Paul Dreyer at the meeting about Tharp. Tharp, born in 1920, is credited with introducing the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor, according to WHOI. Marie Tharp Lane is also not the first street in Woods Hole to be renamed.
