“If there was an oil spill tomorrow, we’re ready,” said Amy Kukulya, a research engineer and principal investigator at WHOI in charge of the Scibotics Lab. WHOI worked with the U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday on how deploying the robot would work and to test retrieving it with a helicopter. It can map out the source and extent of the spill, how much oil is out there and at what pace the oil is leaking. Fernando del Cid, avionics electrical technician for the Coast Guard, said the Coast Guard was testing its own capabilities of deploying materials from a helicopter. Kukulya said people often ask her if there were an oil spill in the Arctic tomorrow, would she be ready?
