Climate modelling: predicting the future of the planet

“The ultimate goal of my research is to determine what causes the Earth’s climate to change abruptly,” says climate modeller Dr Alan Condron. The Earth’s climate is a dazzlingly complex system and predicting how it will change is no easy task. “The Arctic is basically a vast reservoir of relatively fresh ocean water, covered by entirely fresh floating sea ice,” explains Alan. Antarctica releases five times more freshwater into the ocean than the Greenland ice sheet, so is of great significance. “The white ice would reflect the sun’s warmth, rather than absorbing it as sea water does, which could cause a worldwide cooling effect.”
